GIMP Assignment – Animated Sphere

This GIMP assignment will help students create an animated sphere. In order to do this, students will have to experiment with GIMP's grid (view grid, snap to grid). While this assignment tutorial is very prescriptive, teachers should allow students to reproduce similar products following this one. To create the animated sphere, students will use the "spinning globe" filter. Don't be surprised if the final product looks different than the shown sample.

GIMP Assignment – Internet Meme

This basic-level GIMP assignment is intended to be given to students once they have understood, to a basic degree, how layers work. They should also be familiar with the text tool. While students are encouraged to use original photos, they can also use copyright-free photos that they find on the Internet. Typical completion time for this assignment is between 45 and 90 minutes, depending on how proficient students are using GIMP. This assignment would also work very well with Photoshop.

GIMP Assignment – Neon Glow

This GIMP assignment will require students to create text that has a neon glow. Effects that students will experiment with are: Blurring parts of an image. Adding an alpha channel to a layer (to achieve transparency). Use of filters to create an "Alpha to logo". Teachers are encouraged to have students reproduce similar products following the initial tutorial. Students should be given enough time to experiment with various filters and apply interesting effects.

This GIMP assignment encourages students to use tools that they are already familiar with. Prior to this assignment, students should be well-versed with the following GIMP tools: filters, text to path, bucket fill, smudge, blur, dodge, gradient, layers, clone, flip, healing, airbrush. Students should have completed assignments specific to the afore-mentioned tools prior to attempting this one. However, in an inquiry-based environment, teachers may choose to demonstrate how each tool works and/or encourage students to search the Internet for related resources.
